How do I use this app?

The NatureHood app is a simple tool to help identify local wildlife and map wildlife sightings in the National Capital Region. To record a wildlife sighting using the app you do the following:

  1. At the home screen click the "Report a sighting" button. This takes you to the animal categories screen.
  2. Choose which type of animal you have seen, either a bird, a mammal, a reptile or an amphibian. There's also a button to learn more about local "at risk" species. Check the glossary if you don't know which type of animal it is. Once you've completed this stage the app takes you to the categories screen.
  3. Choose the category of birds, mammals, reptiles or amphibians that best matches the animal you have spotted. Don't worry if you get it wrong - that's part of learning! Plus, you can always go back and choose a different category. Once you've completed this stage the app takes you to a species info screen.
  4. On the species info screen there are three tabs: "sighting", "info" and "habitat". The sighting tab features a picture of a species in the category you've selected, plus a list of other local species in the same category. There are also 2 "confirm sighting" buttons you can click once you're confident that the species you've seen fits in this category.
  5. By clicking the "Confirm Sighting (Use my location)" button you activate a pop-up form that asks for details of your sighting, including the date, the rough time of day, the number of individuals sighted if more than one, if all individuals looked the same, and any comments you want to add, including questions. The location of your sighting is automatically taken from the GPS unit on your device or computer, or it is approximated based on the IP address of your internet connection. Once you've completed the fields on this form, clicking "Confirm sighting" at the bottom takes you to a "thank you" screen where you can "explore map" to see your observation on a local map, add more sightings, or exit the app.
  6. By clicking the "Confirm Sighting (Manual)" button you're directed to a new screen featuring a Google Map where you scroll around to manually mark the location of your sighting. Once you mark your location on the map a placemarker will appear and the "Longitude" and "Latitude" fields below the map will fill automatically with the coordinates for your sighting. NOTE: This is the recommended method for entering sightings at a later time/once you've returned from the outdoors.
  7. The "Info" tab on each species info screen lists basic facts about the category of animals you've selected, as well as simple things you can do to help species in this category.
  8. The "Habitat" tab on each species info screen lists icons that show the different habitats used by species in each category. Clicking each icon reveals a description of the habitat type it shows.

Who should use this app?

The NatureHood app is intended for school students and beginning 'wildlife observers' of all ages. It is designed to be user-friendly and doesn't require previous knowledge of or training in natural history. This app is not designed for experienced birders or other naturalists, though some experts may find the "info" tabs informative and helpful.

Why use this app?

This app is a basic tool that helps people to recognize and learn about local wildlife, and map their wildlife observations in a public space. Not only is the app educational in many ways, but the data submitted by users tells a story about local wildlife and where it tends to be found. Over time this can reveal patterns - some expected, and some unexpected - that can help local scientists, land managers and conservation practitioners in their work. For example, we expect "beavers" to be found on waterways near wooded areas, but what if they started showing up in dense residential areas inside the city? These patterns might not be revealed unless people - ordinary citizens - share their observations of wildlife. That is the basis of "citizen science" and this app aims to help people become citizen scientists, no matter what level of experience or knowledge they have.

I know my wildlife - why is this app so basic?

Everyone has a different level of experience observing and identifying wildlife, and some people have no experience at all. Similarly, relatively few people have experience participating in "citizen science" related to wildlife. We want to change this. Existing knowledge of how identify wildlife is a key barrier we have observed that limits people's participation in citizen science. That's why this app is so basic - so that lack of knowledge or experience doesn't exclude people from citizen science.

What is NatureHood?

NatureHood is a signature program of Nature Canada. Its goal is connecting people of all ages to nature right where they live - which, in Canada, increasingly means urban centres. NatureHood inspires urban residents to connect with nature through innovative programming, celebratory events and stewardship activities set in urban green spaces and Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs). In July 2012, Nature Canada started its pilot NatureHood program along the Ottawa River at the Lac DeschĂȘnes-Ottawa River IBA. The pilot program extends to both the Ontario and Quebec sides of the water in the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau.

Who is Nature Canada?

Nature Canada is based in Ottawa and is Canada's oldest nature conservation charity. Over the past 75 years, we've helped protect over 63 million acres of parks and wildlife areas in Canada and the countless species that depend on this habitat. Today, we represent a network of over 45,000 members & supporters and more than 350 nature organizations in every province across Canada.

Where do my sightings go when I submit them?

Each sighting you submit is placed on a Google Map that is linked to a database on Nature Canada's servers. The data shown on the map cannot be downloaded directly but are accessible by request. We do not collect your personal information and only the geographic coordinates of your sighting are stored.

I made a mistake. Can I delete a sighting?

No. Currently all deletions have to be done manually from the database on our server. Please contact us to report a mistake that should be deleted. Provide as much detail as possible about the mistake, including the location of the sighting, the category of animal and the date of your sighting.

Why collect information on wildlife observations?

Collecting information on the type, time and location of wildlife observations in our region helps to tell a story about local wildlife and where it tends to be found. Over time this can reveal patterns - some expected, and some unexpected - that can help local scientists, land managers and conservation practitioners in their work. For example, we expect "beavers" to be found on waterways near wooded areas, but what if they started showing up in dense residential areas inside the city?

What is citizen science?

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, citizen science includes "projects in which volunteers partner with scientists to answer real-world questions". Participation is open to anyone, regardless of background or experience, and each participant is a valuable team member. Citizen science is a very efficient way for researchers to answer tough scientific questions by collecting lots of data, over long periods, in lots of places with the help of lots of people.

How will my data be used?

Your data will contribute to nature education and citizen science efforts in our region. While your sightings may not be exact, they still tell a story about the types of animals found at different times in different places. Your sightings can help to reveal patterns and confirm trends that local researchers, land managers and conservation practitioners may be investigating.

Is my personal information being collected?

No. This app only collects your geographic coordinates using the location reported by your device's GPS unit, or the approximate location linked to your computer's IP address. We do not collect any personal identifcation information.

Where can I access the data collected through this app?

Please contact Nature Canada. Unfortunately the data shown on the map cannot be downloaded directly.

Can I download this app?

No. This app is based on the internet just like a website. We designed it this way to keep it free and to make sure it was widely accessible to users, regardless of which phone, tablet or computer they might have.

Do I need an internet connection to use this app?

Yes. This app is internet-based and you must be online to navigate through the screens and submit your sightings.

Amphibian

A class of vertebrate animals that are cold-blooded or "ectothermic". Amphibians include frogs and toads, salamanders and caecilians and almost all species start out with gills living in water, before developing into air-breathing adults that may live on land and/or in water.

Aquatic (animal)

An organism that depends on aquatic environments (typically freshwater) for at least some part of its life cycle, including breeding, feeding or early development.

Aquatic (environment)

An area of water (usually freshwater) found on the Earth's surface that includes puddles, natural pools, streams, creeks, ponds, rivers, lakes or waterfalls. Aquatic environments may be permanent or temporary, depending on whether it is fed by precipitation, run-off and/or groundwater.

Bird

A class of vertebrate animals that are warm-blooded or "endothermic". Birds are grouped into the class Aves and all species have feathers, a beak (without teeth), two wings, two legs and reproduce by laying eggs.

Breeding

The period of time in which the male and female of a species court one another, reproduce and raise young.

Carnivore/carnivorous

An animal that only feeds on or derives energy from the tissue or flesh of other animals, either by hunting or scavenging.

Carrion

The tissue or flesh of an animal that is already dead and decaying.

Citizen Science

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, citizen science includes "projects in which volunteers partner with scientists to answer real-world questions". Participation is open to anyone, regardless of background or experience, and each participant is a valuable team member. Citizen science is a very efficient way for researchers to answer tough scientific questions by collecting lots of data, over long periods, in lots of places with the help of lots of people.

Conifer/evergreen

Includes trees and shrubs that reproduce using cones, such as spruce and pine trees, and typically includes species that have needles instead of broad leaves. The term evergreen mostly applies to trees that do not lose their needles during the winter and therefore remain green year-round, those some broadleaf plants, ferns and mosses are also considered evergreen.

Dabbling ducks

Includes ducks and waterfowl that typically feed in shallow waters by dipping their head below the surface instead of diving.

Deciduous/broadleaf

Includes trees and other plants that loose their leaves or needles during the driest period of the year, which in Canada is the winter months. The definition of broadleaf trees and plants applies strictly to those species that have broader leaves instead of needles, which are in fact modified leaves.

Diving ducks

Includes ducks such as scaups and pochards that typically feed in deeper or turbulent waters by diving completely below the surface to gather food.

Ecosystem

Refers to a full community of living organisms and the non-living environments they inhabit and the interaction between these living and non-living components. Those interactions are defined by the flow of nutrients and energy between living and non-living ecosystem components. An ecosystem is a collection of habitats (including aquatic and terrestrial) and many organisms of all different kinds from the smallest bacteria to the largest mammals.

Ecosystem benefits/Ecosystem services

Includes the processes and outputs that organisms on Earth require for life or for sustenance, such as the creation of oxygen by photosynthesizing plants, the pollination of crops and flowering plants by pollinating insects, the purification of water by soils and aquatic plants, and the natural control of pest populations by their predators.

Forage (verb)

To search for food in a given area.

Grassland (habitat)

An area where grasses, either native or crop species, are the dominant vegetation. Grassland habitats can include flowers, small shrubs and sedges, and may contain some scattered trees and tall shrubs, including fencerows or tree-lined roadways.

Green space

Typically a small park, public space, or empty lot in an urban or suburban area that contains natural vegetation that may provide cover for wildlife.

Habitat

The environment or area in which an organism lives and carries out its life cycle. Habitats include other living organisms and non-living features such as soil, and are defined by physical features such as climate.

Herbivore/herbivorous

Refers to organisms that only feed on or get their energy from plant tissues.

Hibernate

Refers to a period in which a warm-blooded or "endothermic" animal becomes inactive and enters a state of low metabolism, including a low body temperature, very slow breathing and a low heart rate. Hibernation is typically done as a way to survive periods when food is scarce.

Mammal

A class of vertebrate animals that are warm-blooded or "endothermic". Mammals include the largest creatures on Earth and have hair or fur, mammary glands in females, a complex brain region called the "neocortex", and have inner ear bones that are lacking in birds and reptiles. Humans are mammals.

Meadow

Refers to an open area of vegetation that includes grasses as well as flowers, shrubs and scattered trees. It differs from a grassland in that it is not dominated by grasses.

Migrate/Migration - spring or fall

With respect to birds and mammals, usually refers to the seasonal movement of organisms over a long distance to an area where sufficient food , habitat and shelter is available. In birds migration typically occurs in the spring between the months of March and June when birds move northward in the northern hemisphere, and again in the fall between July and November when birds move southward for the winter. Some bird species have a less predictable migration pattern that can include east-west movements.

Migratory

Refers to an organism that undergoes seasonal or periodic migration from one location to another, either because it has to (for example, to find food) or because it chooses to do so (for example, to avoid competition with other species).

Nesting

Usually a period within the breeding cycle of a bird or rodent, it's the time when the adults are preparing to reproduce and raising their young.

Nesting cavity

A natural or excavated hole in a tree or in the ground in which an animal builds its nest and raises its young.

Nocturnal

Refers to an organism that is active during the night, typically from the period just before dusk to the period just after dawn.

Omnivorous

Refers to an organism that passes the winter months in a particular area, typically the same area where it breeds.

Pesticide

A group of products, including solids, liquids and gases, that are meant to destroy plant, animal, insect, fungal or microbial pests. Herbicides, insecticides and fungicides are all types of pesticides intended to destroy unwanted plants, insects and fungus (including mushrooms), respectively.

Predator

Refers to a carnivorous or omnivorous organism that feeds on or consumes another living organism other than a plant or fungus, usually by hunting, stalking or ambushing. Predators consume prey.

Prey

Refers to a living organism, other than a plant or fungus, that is consumed by a predator. Prey do not always die as a result of predation.

Reptile

A class of vertebrate cold-blooded or "ectothermic" animals that includes the snakes, turtles, crocodilians and lizards. Reptiles have scales or scutes instead of fur or feathers and most reptiles reproduce by laying eggs instead of giving birth to live young.

Riparian

Refers to the zone of habitat that is found along the edge of a waterway such as a creek or river. Shoreline is a similar term but usually refers to the edge of a waterbody such as a pond or lake.

Roost

With respect to birds, the area where an individual rests when its not active.

Songbird

Refers generally to the all "passerine" or true perching birds including swallows, crows, thrushes, warblers and finches. In a taxonomically-arranged bird guide for eastern Canada, the songbirds can be thought of as all species found after the woodpeckers.

Terrestrial (animal)

An organism that depends on terrestrial environments for most of its life cycle, including breeding, feeding and finding shelter.

Terrestrial (environment)

A non-aquatic area found on the land surface or underground that includes burrows, caves, grasslands, forests, hills, cliffs and mountains.

Waterway

A natural or human-made aquatic environment that contains moving water, regardless of the pace of movement. Waterways can include storm drains, canals, creeks, streams, rivers and even glacial flows.
